A fire engulfing a Lawndale home in the early hours of Wednesday led to a porch collapse, severely injuring three, including two Chicago Police Department (CPD) officers and a 75-year-old woman. NBC Chicago reported that the blaze, which started around 1:00 a.m. at the residence located at 1200 S. Kedvale, resulted in the hospitalization of the victims in a serious but stable condition.
Officials plugged chasms as firefighters contended with a structure deemed "unstable." The CPD officers courageously assisted in the evacuation of occupants before the edifice's front porch descended into debris, according to NBC Chicago. Following the collapse, at least one officer was discharged, with the other officer and the civilian remaining under intensive care. The civilian, an elderly woman, was reported to be in critical condition.
By daybreak, the fire had been extinguished, yet the task remained incomplete. Responders persisted in scouring the ruins for additional victims, unaccounted-for residents who could still be entombed within the wreckage. "We're not sure if he's in the structure," First District Fire Chief Jim McDonough stated during a morning update, signaling the grim uncertainty firefighters faced due to the home's precarious condition. This was highlighted in CFD Media's post, which also mentioned fire companies having to operate defensively because of the building's instability.
