Chaos erupted at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport earlier today when a man, engaged in a violent confrontation with a Broward Sheriff's Office deputy, had to be subdued with a Taser. The Broward Sheriff's Office reported that the fray began around 5 a.m. in Terminal 1, where 32-year-old Anthony Costi was reported to be causing a disturbance.
Attempting to quell the situation, a deputy approached Costi with the intention to de-escalate the conflict. This encounter, however, took a violent turn when the man assaulted the officer, as NBC Miami detailed in their coverage of the incident.
In response to the aggression, the deputy called for backup. As per the situation's urgency, another deputy arrived at the scene and deployed a Taser to subdue Costi, enabling them to take him into custody. Additional information obtained by WPTV News Channel 5 West Palm confirms the deployment of the Taser and Costi’s apprehension.
Following the altercation, both the individual in question and the assaulted deputy were transported to Broward Health Medical Center for evaluation. "The deputy was medically cleared and later released from the hospital," as per an update from WPTV News Channel 5 West Palm. Costi, on the other hand, was arrested on charges that include battery on a law enforcement officer, obstruction with violence, and disorderly conduct.
