The man convicted of the 2010 murder of Gilbert police Lt. Eric Shuhandler has died in prison, according to official reports. Christopher Redondo, aged 49, passed away at the Lewis prison in Buckeye. The cause of his death has not yet been disclosed to the public, according to Arizona’s Family.
News of Redondo's death emerged close to the 14th anniversary of the fatal shooting of Lt. Shuhandler. During the fateful traffic stop in 2010, Shuhandler was fatally shot by Redondo after approaching his vehicle, which had a partially obscured license plate. Upon learning of an outstanding arrest warrant for Redondo, the situation escalated quickly leading to the tragedy. Redondo had been convicted and sentenced to life in prison nearly a decade later, in 2019. "Officials say Redondo died at the Lewis Corrections Department prison facility in Buckeye on January 26," as reported by abc15.com.
The aftermath of the shooting saw Redondo and his accomplice, Daimen Joseph Irizarry, who was behind the wheel, lead police on a perilous 50-mile chase. The pursuit was marked by gunfire and a barrage of tools hurled from Redondo's truck aimed at officers. Irizarry was convicted and sentenced to 107 years for his role in the drive-by shooting and aggravated assault. "Redondo also climbed into his truck’s bed and tossed wrenches, an air compressor tank, and other objects at pursuing officers to get them to back off," per Arizona’s Family.
