The wave of teen violence plaguing the town of Gilbert, Arizona, has seen yet another development with the indictment of a second suspect, 18-year-old Aris Michael Arredondo. Officials from the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office confirmed that Arredondo faces charges of aggravated robbery and aggravated assault, crimes considered to be felonies under Arizona law, Fox 10 Phoenix reported.
Arredondo's indictment follows closely behind that of Christopher Fantastic, whose violent actions during the altercation were captured on video. The footage allegedly showed Fantastic "punched the victim multiple times while the victim was on the ground in the parking lot and appeared to be shielding himself from the attack with his arms," and was later seen "kicked and stomped on the victim multiple times while the victim was still on the ground," per court documents cited by Fox 10 Phoenix.
In an interview with the victim's parents, they shared the harrowing aftermath of their son's experience. The assault left the teenager with internal kidney damage, and the family has already spent $15,000 on medical expenses. Looking for a safer environment, the victim was sent overseas for his protection. In statements obtained by Fox 10 Phoenix, Richard Kuehner, the victim's father, expressed his disbelief, stating, "I moved to Gilbert because it was ranked the safest city in Arizona and the second safest city in the United States. And they had the best school. So you know, that was the reason I came here."
The investigation into the growing issue of teen violence in Gilbert has led to the arrests of both Arredondo and Fantastic, as well as two 16-year-old minors who also face similar charges. Bonds set at $25,000 for Arredondo and Fantastic have been reported, with Arredondo released on bail and under house arrest via ankle monitor, while Fantastic stays in jail. Alongside these arrests, Gilbert Police Chief Michael Soelberg acknowledged nine active investigations into teen violence, an acknowledgment that reinforces the community's outcry for a response, as reported by Fox 10 Phoenix.
The victim's mother conveyed the emotional and psychological toll the attack took on her son, saying, "It was just so overwhelming," according to an interview with Fox 10 Phoenix. The event was initially reported to authorities with substantial evidence but received little investigation, prompting public pressure which led to a reopening of the case as new victims came forward. The mother's plight underscores the severity of the violence that certain individuals pose, leaving a trail of havoc in their wake.
