A violent clash between two students at North Miami Beach High School left one hospitalized and another facing serious charges after a stabbing incident on campus Thursday afternoon. According to NBC Miami, the altercation occurred around 12:30 p.m. when two male students met at the bleachers and a fistfight escalated, resulting in one student brandishing a sharp object and stabbing the other.
The school was swiftly put on lockdown as first responders airlifted the injured party, who is now in stable condition, to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, officials confirmed and said they also were shooting with Chopper 6, which showed a significant police presence at the scene. Miami-Dade Schools Police Deputy Chief Carlos Fernandez disclosed, "One of the students removed a sharp object, we don’t know exactly what it is, it hasn’t been recovered. Unfortunately, he stabbed the other student." The attacker fled the campus sparking negotiations with his mother to surrender him to the authorities. By Friday morning, the 16-year-old assailant turned himself in to law enforcement, officials said.
Identified as Dadley Romain, the suspect appeared in front of the law where he now faces charges including attempted murder and aggravated battery with great bodily harm as Local 10 reported the teen confessed to the stabbing, stating that he brought a steak knife from home after a previous altercation with the victim earlier in the week. Romain's mother voiced concerns in court regarding bullying at school, though the judge dismissed this as an unjustifiable reason for the crime. The court ordered a 21-day juvenile detention stay for Romain as prosecutors consider escalating the case to adult court.
The incident has rocked the student body and parents alike, with Yajaira Rojas, a parent, telling Local 10, “You gotta be scared about what’s going on in there, and your kids are in there, so it’s scary.” In addition, details provided to NBC Miami by police state that Romain, after fleeing the campus and being picked up, refused to divulge who helped him escape or the current whereabouts of the weapon used in the stabbing.
