A harrowing scene unfolded on a Palm Beach Gardens' roadway when a car sailed off an overpass and crashed onto an SUV, narrowly missing a fatal encounter. The stunning incident took place on PGA Boulevard beneath the Interstate 95 onramp. Angie Lewis, the driver of the SUV, recounted to CBS News Miami the moment the Mercedes fell from sky, saying, "All of a sudden, my roof caved in in the back of the truck. The truck shook." Despite the chaos, police confirmed that miraculously no injuries were reported.
The airborne vehicle, driven by a juvenile according to the Palm Beach Gardens police, was involved in a chase with officers just moments before the accident. WFLX reported the vehicle was initially being stopped for a traffic violation when it fled from law enforcement, leading to the deployment of stop sticks before the driver lost control and took a literal plunge off the ramp. The young driver of the Mercedes has since been taken into custody.
The victim, Lewis, who survived the out-of-the-blue vehicular assault with her vehicle's roof caved in, expressed profound relief that her daughters, who usually occupy the rear seats that bore the brunt of the collapse, were not with her at the time. "It comes in waves," Lewis told CBS News Miami. "I think about it. I cry because it's her seat that got demolished, and had she been there, she may not be here now."
Despite the stunning circumstances and severity of the impact, it was confirmed by authorities that no one was hurt in the crash, a detail that might seem improbable given the violent merging of paths these two drivers faced. The juvenile perpetrator, now facing the consequences of his precipitous flight from law enforcement, has left the local community in shock over an averted tragedy that could have been far worse.
