Tragedy struck Austin's Lady Bird Lake Monday when emergency crews retrieved a body from its cool waters. Concern spread quickly as first responders descended upon the scene near West Cesar Chavez Street following a 1:31 p.m. call, as reported by KVUE. Details regarding the identity and cause of death remain murky, as the Austin Police Department's Homicide Unit has been tasked to earnestly investigate the unnerving discovery.
A group of friends, including Jaydon Wolf, were drawn to the lakefront, harboring hope that the found body was not that of their missing friend. "Our initial thoughts were hopefully it was not our friend, you know we just don't want it to be our friend," Wolf shared in a somber interview with FOX 7 Austin.
The Austin Police Department received what they termed a check welfare urgent call around the same time the body was reported seen by a 911 caller, found floating some 20 feet from the north shoreline of the lake. Officer Ariel Crumes of the APD offered scant facts, stating "A caller stated on the north side of Lady Bird Lake, 20 feet in the water, he thought he had found a dead body." Regulars of the popular trail, such as Abdul Tabbakha, are rattled by the incident. Tabbakha recounts previous instances of bodies being discovered in the lake, which has spurned local fears of a potential serial killer at large.
The City of Austin had pledged to enhance safety with a million-dollar investment into cameras and improved lighting around Rainey Street, a strategy set to commence this summer, as noted less than a mile from the direful scene. "I know we have no details here, yet, but if it is the same person, the same story, it is kind of crazy," Tabbakha told FOX 7 Austin. The community now waits for answers, collectively holding its breath as the investigation unfolds.
