San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins revealed a jury's verdict on a harrowing case of domestic violence that reached its gruesome apex on a day of worship. Wyn Leung, a 47-year-old San Francisco resident, was convicted of the first-degree murder of his estranged wife, according to a press release from the DA's office. The violent episode occurred after Palm Sunday services on March 25, 2018. In addition to murder, the jury found Leung guilty of felony domestic violence causing great bodily injury and violation of a restraining order causing injury.

"I would like to thank the jury for their service in this case and delivering justice to the victim’s family and friends who have patiently waited for years to see justice achieved," Jenkins said. Her office's commitment to supporting victims "for as long as it takes to see justice done" was reaffirmed, as was their resolve to ensure "there is accountability and abusers face consequences." The victim had previously filed for divorce and, just days before a scheduled court date regarding the custody of their children, was brutally attacked by Leung in the church.

The conviction came after evidence presented at trial showed that despite a restraining order, Leung sought out his wife at the church. He then relayed a message via the pastor to discuss their children, which she refused. Following her refusal, Leung confronted and stabbed her 20 times before attempting to harm himself. The woman, grievously wounded, later died despite first responders' efforts to save her life. Assistant District Attorney Danielle Hilton, with a team of investigators and support staff, led the successful prosecution. "I am tremendously thankful for all of the men and women from the various police departments who worked on their vacations, came in when injured, and went above and beyond to help ensure this victim of domestic violence received justice," Hilton expressed her gratitude following the conviction.

Now in custody, awaiting sentencing scheduled for March 4, Leung faces the consequences of his actions. The case has drawn attention to the plights of domestic violence victims and the importance of the justice system in addressing these tragedies. During this time, Jenkins and her team urge anyone needing support to seek help, providing emergency numbers and contact information for local support resources. The National Domestic Violence Hotline, WOMAN Inc., Asian Women's Shelter, and La Casa De Las Madres Crisis text line were all highlighted for those seeking assistance.
