In a string of tragic events in San Francisco, two teenagers have lost their lives to the hazardous craze of train surfing. A 15-year-old boy and 19-year-old Daniel Baran died in separate incidents after falling from BART trains. According to NBC Bay Area, both fatalities occurred near the Balboa Park BART station, with the latest incident taking place Sunday. Videos promoting this perilous practice have circulated on social media, leading city officials to demand action from platforms like TikTok to remove the content. "A truly great TikTok is not worth your life," Supervisor Rafael Mandelman said, voicing his concern over the trend.

BART officials have started investigating possible modifications to prevent access to train rooftops, NBC Bay Area reported. New York City has also experienced a spike in train surfing incidents, prompting Mayor Eric Adams to launch a public campaign against it, citing its deadly consequences. Despite the dangers, social media seems to glorify this activity, luring teenagers like the 15-year-old victim profiled in The Standard, who owned an Instagram account with videos of his stunts.

The mothers of the two victims have spoken out to warn the public about the dangers. Marina Baran, Daniel's mother, witnessed how easily her son could move between train carriages. Wishing to prevent further loss, she said she had seen how easy it was to open the door between train carriages and squeeze through onto the roof, according to an interview with The Standard. Gabriel Zubovsky, a friend of Daniel's, reminisced about their shared love for math and science and remembered Daniel for his sense of humor and penchant for thrills.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has called the 15-year-old's death "senseless and tragic," highlighting their efforts to prevent access to Muni tunnels and urging media platforms to decline to amplify such incidents. "We monitor and respond to all behavior at Muni stations and on Muni buses and trains," said an SFMTA spokesperson in a statement obtained by KTVU. The statement by SFMTA stresses the need for social media outlets to refrain from glorifying the risky behavior that, too often, ends in the loss of young lives.

Meanwhile, as the community grapples with these losses, Gateway Charter School mourned the death of its student, as reported by KTVU. The interim Executive Director Aaron Watson expressed condolences to the family and outlined the support provided to students in the face of the tragedy.
