A 57-year-old West Palm Beach man was killed early Sunday following a two-car collision in Delray Beach, according to officials. German Ribon Barreto was identified as the victim in the brutal crash that occurred around 3:39 a.m. at the intersection of Military Trail and Las Verdes Drive, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office confirmed.
Barreto was travelling north on Military Trail in his 2013 Toyota Rav4 when a 2013 Mercedes C250, driven by a 21-year-old man also from West Palm Beach, failed to steer clear and collided with the rear of Barreto's vehicle, the sheriff's office said. The impact caused Barreto’s car to spin out of control and smash into a telephone pole, leading to catastrophic consequences. The young man in the Mercedes sustained minor injuries, while Barreto was pronounced dead at the scene.
As reported by The Palm Beach Post, the sheriff's officials noted that alcohol or drugs might have been a factor for the Mercedes driver, and charges are now pending as the investigation continues. The crash not only took a life but temporarily obstructed the entrance to Emmanuel Catholic Church, causing further disruptions in the quiet early hours.
A spokesperson for Delray Beach Fire Department, Ted White, informed WPTV that the emergency crews responded quickly, though the tragedy unfolded just within the city borders. Details from the PBSO crash report indicate that, for reasons still unclear, the driver of the Mercedes did not fully avoid the Toyota ahead, leading to the fateful collision.
The community is now left to grapple with the aftermath of what appears a preventable tragedy, pending the sheriff's office’s final assessment. The young driver involved in the incident has been left with minor physical wounds, but the repercussions of the collision are likely to extend far beyond the physical injuries sustained.
