Woman Accuses Ex-Gyno of Abuse, Slams Endeavor Health for SilenceSource: Cook County Sheriff's Office

A lawsuit filed Monday in Cook County by a woman, identified as Jane Doe 300, alleges sexual abuse at the hands of former gynecologist Fabio Ortega and accuses Endeavor Health of inaction despite previous complaints. The suit claims Ortega, who worked for Endeavor's predecessors, conducted sexually stimulating exams on her at a facility in Evanston, as reported by the Chicago Tribune.

While pursued by 22 other suits since 2019, Jane Doe 300's case, according to the Chicago Tribune, states that the abuses she endured were after Endeavor Health was alerted to a police investigation into Ortega. Despite facing charges of criminal sexual assault in 2018 and 2019, which led to his guilty plea and three-year prison sentence in 2021, Endeavor concealed these charges, victimizing patients who, only after seeing news articles, realized the nature of their maltreatment.

In a separate lawsuit, another woman, also unnamed and referred to as Jane Doe, recounted experiences that she said bordered on rape. She told NBC 5 Investigates about her uncomfortable conversations with Ortega, which escalated over time to an outright inappropriate request. She represents one of more than 300 former patients who claim Endeavor Health, owning Swedish Covenant and Northshore, ignored sexual abuse allegations against Ortega for decades.

Attorney Parker Stinar slammed Endeavor for their lack of action. "They haven't sent out notices to all their former patients, alerting them to you may have been sexually abused," Stinar told NBC 5 Investigates. In response, Endeavor has maintained a position of non-tolerance towards abuse, stating their priority remains a safe environment for patients and staff, and pointed to enhanced policies that support reporting of abuse.

As this legal battle unfolds, the emotional toll on victims continues to grow. One Jane Doe grimly shared with NBC 5 Investigates her struggle with informing her daughters of her ordeal, indicative of the broader painful dilemma facing the multitude of families connected to this case.
