A tragedy struck in Pompano Beach, Florida, as a man lost his life after tumbling off the Intracoastal Bridge on 14th Street on Saturday afternoon. As per the report from BocaNewsNow.com, the man was either crossing the bridge as it was opening or stepped onto a non-secure part, causing him to lose balance and fall into the bridge's mechanisms.
The incident did not seem to be intentional, and although multiple witnesses attempted to assist him, they could not reach the victim in time. Broward County Fire Rescue launched a "technical rescue" operation, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The aftermath of the fall prompted major traffic disruptions in the area surrounding the bridge.
On the other side of the tragedy, the Northeast 14th Street Causeway drawbridge became a site of investigation and was closed for several hours, reported WSVN. Witnesses recounted that the individual walked past them, ignored the raised gate, and fatally fell over.
While the Broward County Sheriff’s Office pieced together the day's harrowing events, local residents expressed their dismay. “I’ve never seen this before, and it’s really sad,” a longtime local told WSVN. Sheriff's deputies have ruled out foul play, as detectives await a final word from an autopsy by Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office.
