Bullets flew on the Bay Bridge as an unidentified assailant targeted a motorist in a terrifying freeway shooting, leaving the driver wounded and sparking a manhunt by California Highway Patrol (CHP), agency reports confirm.
The frightening incident occurred this past Friday, right around the evening rush. Eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 became a crime scene as the suspect's vehicle rolled up alongside the victim's car just beyond Yerba Buena Island, firing multiple shots. A single bullet struck and injured the driver, whose name has yet to be released, according to the CHP's statement.
In the aftermath, the wounded motorist managed to stop his vehicle and dial 9-1-1 for help. They were swiftly taken to a local hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Meanwhile, CHP officers swarmed the site, closing down four lanes and causing heavy traffic backlog for a grueling two hours while they scoured for evidence.
As of now, details remain sparse, the suspect's vehicle and the motives behind the daylight attack are elusive, and CHP detectives are knee-deep in their investigation. They've called the public for any leads, urging witnesses or anyone with pertinent info to come forward and contact the CHP Investigations Tip line," the agency appealed in their online bulletin.
"The mission of the California Highway Patrol is to provide the highest level of Safety, Service, and Security," CHP emphasized, doubling down on their commitment to track down the perpetrator(s) of this brazen act of roadway violence.
