The fire, which broke out Monday at a strip mall located at the 100 block of Roosevelt Road in Villa Park, took firefighters a grueling 10 hours to extinguish. According to a report by the Chicago Tribune, the Windy City Curling Club saw its playing fields completely melted away as a result of the combat against the flames.
The Windy City Curling Club, a fixture in the local sports community, successfully raised over $29,000 via a GoFundMe campaign following the disaster that not only destroyed the ice sheets but also caused significant water damage to the venue's infrastructure. "All of us view our curling club as a second home," club secretary Eric Reithel told the Chicago Tribune. "It's where we meet our friends and we hang out and throw rocks." The club's beloved main office, important for livestreaming competitions, bore the brunt of the damage.
In the wake of the closure, community spirit has shone through the gloom with nearby clubs opening their doors to the displaced members. "It just meant the world to all of us," Reithel expressed. Notably, John Shuster, an Olympic gold medalist in curling from 2018, was among the many supporters who contributed to the club's GoFundMe drive. "Like, it’s not out of the possibility that essentially one of our Tom Bradys reached out to us," Reithel said, as reported by the Chicago Tribune.

In addition to the curling club's setback, an adjacent lighting appliance store faced damage as well.
