The scandal at Fenton Community High School continues to unfold as details emerge about the alleged misconduct of a dismissed staffer. In a bid for transparency, the Superintendent of Fenton Community High School District 100, James Ongtengco, laid bare a timeline of complaints and reports of inappropriate behavior by a former school employee, dating from 2011 to 2023.
According to a recent article by CBS News, the series of events became public after the school district decided to release a comprehensive timeline following police document leaks on social media. These leaks suggest the former staff member was involved in sexual relationships with students. The school's response included referring incidents to the local authorities and placing the staff member on administrative leave after allegations resurfaced last year.
While the initial allegations seem to have been investigated by the Department of Child Family Services (DCFS) and were reported as unfounded, the persistence of accusations has led to renewed scrutiny. As reported by CBS News, since 2011 the staff member faced several administrative actions, including receiving disciplinary letters and a mandate to attend personal conduct training. The most recent of these, an anonymous tip in May 2023, was followed by a direct complaint from a former student in September 2023, resulting in immediate administrative leave for the accused staff member.
In light of the allegations, Bensenville Village President Frank DeSimone has called for Ongtengco's resignation to aid community healing. Echoing these sentiments, parents, and the local education association have also expressed their disappointment with the handling of the situation. "My heart is broken watching the response of this board to the pain - pain that this community is suffering. I employ you, I am begging you, please change the way you are responding to this crisis while they were still time for healing," Fenton Education Association President Patrick Escobedo told ABC7 Chicago.
One alleged victim, who spoke at a school board meeting, detailed the trauma experienced at the hands of the staffer, stating, "You failed to support me and other young girls who are assaulted and groomed by a monster that you protected, empowered and promoted as a community hero," ABC7 Chicago reports. The Fenton Community High School now faces the challenge of navigating these troubling allegations, as they seek to foster a process of healing and restore trust within the school community.
