An 18-year-old Franklin teen has been charged with criminal homicide following a fatal shooting that claimed the life of a recent high school graduate. Matthew Roufail was taken into custody after the May 25 incident, when he allegedly used an AR-15-style rifle to shoot Lily Basil, who he believed was unloaded, the Franklin Police Department reported.

According to a statement from the police, emergency services were directed to a shooting at 1417 Hanson Drive. Dispatchers instructed the caller to stop on Murfreesboro Road for EMS assistance, however, despite efforts, Basil succumbed to her injuries at Vanderbilt Medical Center. Roufail, who reported the accidental nature of the event to authorities, highlighted a profound misjudgment of firearms' safety.

The firearm, identified as a .22 caliber rifle, was retrieved from a trunk, where the victim and Roufail had gathered. Following the tragedy, Roufail was arrested and later released on a $150,000 bond, with a court date set for June 8, as News Channel 5 reported.

Page High School, where Basil graduated just a day before the fatal event released a heartfelt statement, "Lily was a light; she was kind, sweet and extremely respectful. Her smile lit up every room she entered," Dr. Katie Hill, the school principal, told WKRN. In honor of Basil, a "Light the Night Memorial" has been organized by the school for May 31 at sunset urging the community to light a candle or a luminary, or to simply turn on a porch light. The ceremony for Basil will also be held at Rolling Hills Church.

To further support the grieving family, a meal train has been established for those wishing to offer assistance during this time of loss. Details of the community-led support efforts were not immediately available, but efforts to hold the light of Lily Basil's memory remain at the fore of the community's healing process.
