Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker is slated to ratchet up the Democratic rhetoric as he heads to Wisconsin to deliver the keynote address at the state's Democratic convention in Milwaukee on June 8th. Looking to reinforce his political prowess while simultaneously sounding the alarm on the repercussions of a potential Trump comeback, Pritzker will take the stage with a warning about threats to "fundamental freedoms" in the nation, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
Pritzker, no stranger to out-of-state campaigning, has previously stumped in New Hampshire and Florida in 2022, sparking whispers of possible presidential ambitions, although he has been a supporter of President Joe Biden. The governor's speech is part of a larger Democratic muster, with other notable party voices like Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers and Sen. Tammy Baldwin expected to speak, according to the same report.
Wisconsin, a battleground state, has seen Pritzker involved in maintaining its Democratic hue. In 2023, he injected $1.1 million into the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, and has not shied away from supporting various candidates and causes aligned with the party's stances, particularly on controversial issues like abortion, as detailed in both the Chicago Sun-Times and WisPolitics announcement. "Wisconsin Democrats are experts at winning high-stakes elections and in 2024 everything is on the line," Pritzker said in a statement obtained by WisPolitics.
Across the U.S., Pritzker has put his political weight behind a push against anti-abortion efforts, in concert with other Democratic governors like California's Gavin Newsom, and Michigan's Gretchen Whitmer. This included substantial funding for ballot initiatives challenging abortion limits in states like Florida, Nevada, Arizona, and Montana, as per reporting by the Chicago Sun-Times. Notably, the governor has developed strong ties with fellow Democratic heads in the Midwest, often conversing on strategy and policy—touching on initiatives like hydrogen hubs and multi-state endeavors.
Pritzker's involvement stretches beyond speeches, as he's played a crucial role in landing the Democratic National Convention for Chicago in August. With a record of bankrolling allies and wielding his influence in key states, his appearance at the Wisconsin convention signifies a tightening of blue bonds ahead of the 2024 electoral showdown. "Donald Trump presents an existential threat to fundamental freedoms—from abortion rights to voting rights—and Wisconsin Democrats are ready for the fight," Pritzker asserted.
