
Early Tuesday morning, chaos unfolded in Kendall when a vehicle theft attempt led to a police pursuit involving a BMW. According to Local10, at around 2:50 a.m., Miami-Dade Kendall District police responded to a call about a burglary in progress, where they encountered two suspects attempting to steal a van parked in the 14100 block of Harrison Street.
Upon arrival, an officer illuminated the suspects' vehicle with a spotlight, prompting the driver to maneuver around the police car and flee. Officers pursued the suspects' black BMW, maintaining a low profile as, they did not activate their lights or sirens, and coordinating with aviation units for support. This strategy culminated when the vehicle was spotted parked at Northwest 11th Avenue and 55th Terrace, according to NBC Miami. After the vehicle stopped, both men exited and attempted to escape on foot.
The suspects, identified as 38-year-old Cedric Antoine Johnson and 37-year-old Deverick Kimble, both from Miami, were apprehended shortly after abandoning their vehicle. They now face charges of attempted grand theft of a vehicle and criminal mischief. Local10 reports that the men were allegedly caught by the victim inside the work van, having pried open the passenger-side door and breaking the steering column cover in an apparent attempt to start the vehicle.
Upon arrest, both Johnson and Kimble exercised their rights to avoid speaking with detectives. Subsequently, they were transported to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, the details of this sequence of events were confirmed by the arresting officers. NBC Miami's coverage of the pursuit highlighted that the high-speed chase was caught on video, showcasing the BMW speeding through southwest Miami-Dade with police close behind. The footage captured the intense moments before both men were ultimately placed in custody.
