Bay Bridge commuters faced a fiery disruption yesterday when a car erupted in flames, leading to the temporary closure of multiple lanes on Interstate 80. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the San Francisco Fire Department responded to the incident after a report of a car fire surfaced around 11:30 a.m. westbound by the Harrison Street offramp. The CHP cautioned motorists, advising that the lanes had been shut down and to anticipate delays, according to KRON4.
The fire, visibly consuming the vehicle, initially blocked the first lane of I-80 and progressively the second. Despite the potential for chaos and harm, no injuries were reported in the blaze, creating a visual spectacle and a logistical snarl for several hours on the major transit route. Traffic was disrupted, but all lanes were eventually reopened by 1 p.m. following the quick action of emergency crews.
According to the San Francisco Fire Department, the fire crew swiftly extinguished the blaze, indicating that the cause of the fire was "accidental/mechanical."
