On this Independence Day, a quintessential holiday celebration nearly became a disaster on San Francisco's waters. The San Francisco Fire Department reported an afternoon of high stakes under the Bay Bridge as a 15-foot pleasure craft found itself in imminent peril. The vessel, which had ventured out presumably for the festivities, ran out of fuel and, compounded by a lack of working radio and the inability to anchor, began to drift precariously towards the busy shipping lanes.
Keeping with the swift current of events, the narrative unfolded on X, where SFFD's media handle @yoursffd detailed the rescue operation. According to the San Francisco Fire Department's post, they initially responded "to a Bay Rescue under the Bay Bridge." The post later confirmed, "We have located the 15-foot pleasure craft and confirmed no injuries." The SFFD Marine Units were then prepped to work with the captain to safely return the vessel and its occupants to the familiarity of the dock.

We have located the 15-foot pleasure craft and confirmed no injuries. #yoursffd Marine Units will work with the Captain on the next steps to getting the vessel back to the dock. https://t.co/yuZQe0VV47
Ending on a note of relief, Fire Rescue Boat 1 was enlisted to provide "a courtesy tow to the disabled vessel," as per SFFD's account of the rescue. The smooth execution of this operation allowed the crew and their ship to avoid further drift toward the Bay Bridge and the active shipping lanes.
