A spearfisherman was airlifted to a Miami-area hospital after sustaining injuries from a shark attack off Key West, authorities shared. The incident, which involved a 37-year-old man, occurred on a reef around 3:40 p.m. yesterday, according to information provided by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. Attempting to secure his catch back to his boat when the attack took place, the victim was ultimately subjected to the ocean’s unforeseen ferocity as a bull shark bit him twice in the leg.
Following the attack, the injured man was transported by boat to Stock Island. From there, a Trauma Star helicopter swiftly carried him to Jackson South Medical Center, a step in his urgent journey that became necessary given the gravity of the injuries he had sustained. According to a news release by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office obtained by Local 10, “The victim reportedly was alert and responsive at the time of the airlift.”
