A tragic incident shook the community of Villa Park earlier this week when 25-year-old Anthony Jimenez was charged with the murder of his girlfriend, Jessica Reyes, during a domestic incident. According to CBS News Chicago, the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office announced that Villa Park police officers responded to a call at an apartment on South Michigan Avenue Wednesday morning, where they found Jimenez with blood on his hands and chest. He was taken into custody after indicating to police that he had stabbed Reyes.
Upon entering the apartment, officers discovered Reyes gravely injured and bleeding on the floor. Despite life-saving efforts, she was declared dead at a local hospital shortly before noon. FOX 32 Chicago reports that the couple got into an argument early in the morning, leading Reyes to attempt escape by climbing down from the third-floor balcony. Jimenez met with Reyes in a parking lot below and, after a brief period where it seemed the altercation had calmed, they returned to the apartment. It was there that Jimenez allegedly pulled out a knife and commenced the fatal assault.
As officers pieced together the events, it became clear that the incident escalated further within the apartment. Reyes was attacked as she tried to collect her belongings and was stabbed repeatedly in the side of her head, neck, face, arms, chest, and hands. "The senseless and extremely violent end to a promising young woman’s life, as alleged in this case, will not be tolerated in DuPage County and will be met with the full force of the law," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said.
The arrest has sparked renewed focus on the plight of domestic violence victims. Villa Park Chief of Police Michael Rivas emphasized the importance of recognizing and seeking help for domestic violence, "Jessica deserves to have her name mentioned. We pray for her and her family. This crime should serve for all as a reminder to seek help if you are a victim of domestic violence," he told FOX 32 Chicago. In light of the charges, pre-trial release was denied for Jimenez, and he is scheduled for an arraignment on August 12.
