Early voting in Broward County for the upcoming August 20 Primary Election kicked off this past Saturday, with a soft opening observed by Local 10's Cody Weddle, who noted sparse attendance at various polling locations on the first day. Broward Supervisor of Elections Joe Scott appealed to the electorate with a clear message, "I would just say ‘don’t sleep on August elections," as per Local 10. Scott emphasized the importance of these primaries, highlighting key positions such as school board members and county posts that are up for grabs.
While only party-affiliated voters can cast their votes in certain races like that for U.S. senator, other contests including judicial and school board slots are open to all registered voters. "When that happens, what we have is what’s called a universal primary. So whether you’re a Republican, no party affiliation, minor party – whatever your affiliation – everybody’s gonna see these races." Scott told Local 10. Broward County boasts 28 early voting sites, operational from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. up through August 18, aimed at providing flexibility and convenience for voters.
The Broward County elections office has ensured accommodations are in place: Secure Ballot Intake Drop-boxes for mail ballots and ADA-approved voting machines for voters with disabilities. Voters are reminded to carry a proper picture ID with their signature to the polls, as mandated by Florida law. These details, among others, are available through the office's outreach efforts, urging voters to utilize the early voting period.
"Early voting is a great opportunity for voters to cast their ballots at a time and location that is most convenient for them. We have made it as accessible and secure as possible to ensure everyone can participate in the democratic process. I urge all eligible voters to make use of this period and ensure their voices are heard. Don't forget to bring a friend or family member with you when voting early." said Joe Scott, encouraging turnout and participation in a statement obtained through BrowardVotes.gov.
