Residents of Dania Beach and Hollywood, the Mosquito Control Section of the Public Works Department will be out in force, targeting pesky mosquito larvae. From August 27 through 30, barring any pesky weather delays or unforeseen events, they'll be dispensing larvicide between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., as reported by a recent release.
The strategy involves the larvicide VectoBac WDG, which officials claim is harmless to humans, pets, and even bees. This microbial insecticide, featuring Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) as its active ingredient, is a biodegradable solution that's got the stamp of approval from both the US Environmental Protection Agency and the World Health Organization.
Beyond the night operations, the Broward County Mosquito Control Section is advising property owners to take a gander around their domains for locations where water's taken up residence. Emptying out any containers holding water—from planters to birdbaths—can make a huge dent in preventing the mosquito population from surging.
If you find yourself at odds with a mosquito population, call to 311 right away. Residents can also fill out the online Mosquito Service Request Form.
