Tragedy struck in Hialeah yesterday morning, when a man fatally stabbed a relative and injured two others, leading to a fatal police shooting. CBS News Miami reports that officers responded to a domestic disturbance call at a home near W 42nd Place and W 5th Court shortly before 4:30 a.m. Upon arrival, they found a woman with stab wounds outside the residence and two additional victims inside, alongside an armed male suspect.

As reported by NBC Miami, the deceased victim, identified by family friends on social media, was Madeleyne Gonzalez. Thursday would have marked her 50th birthday. In a touching pre-celebration, a friend wrote on her Facebook wall, "I still don’t know why I wanted to celebrate your birthday in advance… but now I understand that everything happens for a reason."

The confrontation escalated as officers rendered aid to the victims, leading to a police shooting when the suspect reportedly charged at the officers with a knife. Hialeah Police Lieutenant Eddie Rodriguez stated, "As officers were rendering aid to the victims, there was a confrontation between officers and the armed suspect, where officers were forced to discharge their weapons." The suspect's identity has not been officially released, but he was said to be in his late 20s and is reportedly related to the stabbed women.

A neighbor expressed in Spanish his concerns about the suspect's mental health, saying, "It's been a real tragedy. He has had a nervous condition for a long time," having experienced issues before, but had been calm lately. Steadman Stahl, the president of the police union South Florida PBA, which is representing one of the officers involved in the shooting, told NBC Miami, "These things happen in split seconds. But there's body cameras, there was a lot of verbal commands to drop the knife. He did not want to. And when you charge officers with a knife there's no other outcome that could have taken place than what took place."

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an investigation into the officer-involved shooting, which is standard procedure following such incidents. The other two victims, a 17-year-old identified as Amanda Gonzalez, and her grandmother Rosa Gonzalez, were taken to the Ryder Trauma Center for treatment.
