An Indiana State Police trooper, identified as Master Trooper Eric Downey, is on the mend after an incident on Interstate 70 near Richmond. While assisting with a disabled semi-truck on Thursday afternoon, trooper Downey's vehicle was struck from behind, Indiana State Police Department officials reported.
According to FOX59, Downey had parked his fully marked patrol car on the right shoulder behind the semi, which was pulled over near the 151-mile marker, and activated his emergency lights. Around 2:30 p.m., a 1998 Ford F-150 collided with the rear end of Downey's vehicle.
In a statement obtained by WTHR, it was detailed that the Ford was driven by a 33-year-old Ohio man, Jonathon Brinkley. Both Downey and Brinkley sustained non-life-threatening injuries and received treatment at Reid Hospital in Richmond.
Master Trooper Downey reportedly suffered minor head injuries but has since been released from the hospital. Alcohol or drugs were ruled out as factors in the crash, as WISH-TV noted, citing the preliminary investigation. The specifics of the accident remain under further review by Indiana State Police Department.
