The streets of Indianapolis are bustling once again as Gen Con rolls into town, with local businesses bracing to cash in on the influx of gaming aficionados. As vendors, cosplayers, and game enthusiasts gear up, the economic impact is expected to be significant. Visit Indy projects the event to drum up around $77 million—a welcome jolt to the city's pulse.

For Indy's gaming shops like Good Games, Gen Con is like a second Christmas. According to the store's general manager, Robert Tierney, the place teems with consumers seeking to immerse themselves, not only in new games but also in connections with other members of the tabletop tribe. "It's right up there with the Christmas season, as far as the amount of people that come into our store, probably faster passing," Tierney told WTHR. With its storied history and tightly-knit community, it's no surprise that Gen Con continues to be a haven for stories to unfold around every table.

The convention, stretching from August 1 through August 4, has also hit a major milestone this year. FOX59 reports that all badges have sold out in advance—a first for the event—with no room for walk-up badge sales. "We are beyond thrilled to be hosting Gen Con 2024, a monumental celebration of gaming history, with a special focus on Dungeons & Dragons, a cornerstone of our industry," Gen Con president David Hoppe shared in a statement.

This year's Gen Con isn't just about putting a spotlight on the latest board games and merchandise—though with over 500 vendors on deck, that's certainly a major draw. The convention also celebrates the golden anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons. Hoppe stressed the importance of community and legacy in gaming, indicating that every facet of Gen Con 2024 would be a tribute to the genre's trailblazing journey. "This year, we are not just celebrating games; we’re honoring the legacy and the incredible community that has grown around these adventures. From the open-air excitement at our Block Party to the immersive experiences inside the convention center, every element of Gen Con 2024 is a tribute to the pioneering spirit of gaming. We can’t wait for everyone to join us in this unprecedented celebration" Hoppe told FOX59.

Gen Con is no stranger to Indy. Having hosted the convention since 2003 and recently securing it until 2030, the city has long been privy to the vibrant cultural patchwork the convention weaves. From role-playing adventures to block parties, Indianapolis transforms into a grand stage for cooperative storytelling and celebration—a fact that local businesses and the community alike eagerly anticipate year after year.
