A detainee from the Krome Detention Center in Southwest Miami-Dade is the subject of a manhunt by local and federal authorities after an escape was reported yesterday evening. According to a Local10 report, the Miami-Dade Police have joined forces with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to locate the individual, who was confirmed to have left the facility just after 6:30 p.m.
A large-scale search is currently underway, with authorities focusing extensively on a wooded area near the detention center, which is situated at Krome Avenue and Southwest Eighth Street. The nature of the detainee's escape, however, remains undisclosed, and the escaping individual's identity has not been released to the public.
In a statement obtained by WSVN, officials with U.S. Immigration Customs Enforcement confirmed the escape, noting it occurred at the location where immigration processing is conducted. Local law enforcement and ICE have activated a command post near the detention facility to coordinate the search efforts.
The Krome Detention Center, located at 18201 SW 12th Street, has previously been the focus of attention due to various incidents and concerns regarding detainee treatment. This latest incident is sure to draw further scrutiny on the facility's security measures. As the search continues, authorities have been reluctant to release further details, citing operational concerns. The school, Pinecrest Glades Academy at 15250 SW 8th Street, remains on partial lockdown until officials can confidently assure it is safe to lift it.
