A Wasatch County incident has led to charges against a Midway man after he allegedly shot and killed his neighbor's dog. Rodrik Storms faces accusations of conducting this act without any immediate provocation. He has been charged with Aggravated Cruelty to an Animal and Possession of a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Assault, as reported by FOX13. The charges stem from an event over the weekend where Storms is said to have dragged the dog, named Blue, into the street and shot it.
While a neighbor attempted to intervene, Storms reportedly carried out the shooting nonetheless. According to statements by the neighbor, Storms justified his action by saying "that Blue had been a problem long enough and he took care of it," as outlined by FOX13. This violent act took place while the dog's owners were not present.
In contrast to Storms' claim of shooting the dog in self-defense, a KSL article reveals that the sheriff's report found no evidence that Blue attacked Storms. The report suggested that the dog was shot as it was leaving the road, casting doubt on Storms' self-defense claim.
Further complicating the case, Storms has been reported by authorities to have had prior issues with Blue. He allegedly attempted to instigate the dog into chasing him, presumably to build a case for animal control reports. It's stated in the KSL article that evidence pertained to Storms standing on the bike path and shooting Blue in the side of the head, which contradicts an attacking scenario. According to ABC4, detectives did not find definitive proof that Storms dragged the dog out to shoot him. However, they also expressed that the evidence did not back his claim of self-defense.
With the preliminary investigation leaving disparate narratives on the table, Storms is set to make his initial court appearance on the charges on September 25. The outcome will hinge on the veracity of the claims made by Storms, and whether the gathered evidence will substantiate or contradict his version of the tragic events that led to the demise of Blue.
