In a distressing occurrence at Pembroke Pines' Walmart, a 5-year-old child was rescued from an overheated car while a 62-year-old woman, identified as Martine Louis-Jacques, was inside shopping. Bystanders observed the young girl banging desperately on the windows, an act which brought Walmart employees to her aid; authorities state that the car's engine was switched off and all windows were closed, creating an environment of no air circulation, as Local10 reported.
The concerned staff at Walmart responded to the child's signals for help around 2:30 p.m. on a hot afternoon, subsequently managing to unlock the vehicle and escort the visibly shaken child inside the store, as NBC Miami reported. Louis-Jacques had been away for approximately twenty minutes and, once alerted, left the store with the child before the police arrived which was at around 2:51 p.m., adding a layer of complication as the relationship between her and the child remains unspecified by the authorities.
After being safely removed from the car, the young girl encountered her mother near the store's customer service area, to which she "immediately ran to her," indicating a family linkage which is yet to be officially confirmed, according to NBC Miami. Louis-Jacques, upon leaving the store, sidestepped interaction with Walmart employees and departed the scene without making known her connection to the incident.
Walmart's surveillance equipment successfully recorded Louis-Jacques while she parked the vehicle, but notably without the young child as she walked into the store, Louis-Jacques appeared before a judge in a bond court the following day and her bail is currently set at $3,500, she faces one count of child neglect without great bodily harm.
