San Francisco Man Suspected of Meth Possession Following Colma Traffic Stop for Expired RegistrationSource: Colma Police Department

In a routine brush with the law that escalated quickly, a man from San Francisco found himself in handcuffs over more than just an out-of-date car registration. The Colma Police Department reported that they apprehended a 45-year-old San Francisco resident, Samuel Mielke, on suspicion of drug possession during a traffic stop initiated on account of expired vehicle registration tabs.

The incident unfolded last Monday when officers were near a business on Colma Boulevard and spotted the black sedan with registration tabs that had been outdated since August of the previous year. A subsequent traffic stop turned into a drug bust when officers conducted an inventory search of the vehicle before it was towed, as the registration had expired for over six months.

According to a statement released by the Colma Police Department, they found "a large quantity of a controlled substance, believed to be methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia" during the search. Mielke was ultimately arrested for possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also cited for the vehicle registration offense and was released on his promise to appear in court.

As is typical in such cases, the suspect was issued a citation and has been released with an expectation to show up for his day in court. No additional information about the quantity or intended distribution of the controlled substances has been made public.
