In a case that spans multiple states from Texas to South Florida, a Texas man has been charged with the armed kidnapping of a rideshare driver. Twenty-three-year-old Miguel Alejandro Pastran Hernandez allegedly abducted the driver at gunpoint on August 16 after requesting a ride on the rideshare platform, as detailed by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Florida.
Allegations state that once the rideshare driver arrived at a predetermined location — a closed gas station — Pastran Hernandez produced a gun, causing the driver to hear the chilling sound of a round being chambered. He then threatened to bind and put the driver in the back of the vehicle before directing them on a harrowing journey to South Florida. The ordeal culminated in Hialeah, Florida, where the victim seized an opportunity to escape while Pastran Hernandez was purchasing supplies, presumably for another kidnapping.
Following his arrest and the discovery of a loaded firearm in his possession, Pastran Hernandez made a court appearance in Miami on August 20. He faces charges of kidnapping, carjacking, and possessing a firearm during a violent crime and remains detained until a pre-trial detention hearing, set for August 26. An arraignment hearing is also scheduled for September 3.
The investigation, led by the FBI's Miami Field Office, falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a wide-ranging program focused on reducing gun violence and crime and fostering safer neighborhoods. Started in May 2021, PSN aims to build community trust, support violence prevention organizations, prioritize strategic law enforcement, and track the outcomes of these initiatives. Details on Pastran Hernandez's case are available on the Southern District of Florida's court website.
Pastran Hernandez, like all defendants, is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The Southern District of Florida may provide updates on case number 24-mj-3751 through their official channels.
