The West Palm Beach Fire Department is once again stepping up to remember those lost on 9/11 with their 6th Annual Memorial Stair Climb and a new addition this year, a 5K Walk & Run. On September 8, at 515 N Flagler Drive, participants will gather at the break of 9 a.m. to honor the 343 firefighters and the many others who perished in the 2001 attacks. By climbing the equivalent of 110 stories, participants will be taking a symbolic journey similar to the one braved by first responders on that fateful day.
Joining the traditional climb, for the first-time, the event has expanded to include a 5K and 1-mile race that will take runners down an out-and-back course, "along the iconic West Palm Beach waterfront" as reported by the official West Palm Beach website. The day is not only about remembrance, but it also brings in a competitive spirit with a friendly CrossFit competition.
All proceeds from the day's events are set to bolster the efforts of two organizations, the Pediatric Oncology Support Team (POST) and Operation 300. POST offers support to families navigating the impacts of pediatric cancer, while Operation 300 provides mentorship to children who have lost military parent figures. The sentiment of the event, to bond over support for those who face profound loss, synergizes with the collective memory of a day marked by tragedy and valor.
Everyone is welcome to partake in this commemorative event—community members, media representatives, and anyone looking to support these worthy causes. For those looking to sign up or inquire about the event, emails can be sent to [email protected] and registrations can be completed through West Palm Beach’s event page.
