An 18-year-old woman was fatally shot on the southeast side of Indianapolis, and the events that led to her death began yesterday night. The victim, identified by the Marion County Coroner’s Office as Makayla Sue Bauman, was found with gunshot wounds around 9:05 p.m. According to FOX59, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) responded to the incident on the 5900 block of Riva Ridge Drive, which is near Arlington Avenue and Interstate 465.
The initial investigation suggested that the incident unfolded in the 5400 block of Sagebrush Avenue, in a jurisdiction that falls under the Beech Grove Police Department's purview. Bauman, however, was discovered on Riva Ridge Drive, implying she traveled from the site of the shooting before police arrived. The victim was then transported to Eskenazi Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries, as reported by WRTV. IMPD has indicated their role to assist Beech Grove PD with the ongoing investigation.
No suspects or motives have been identified in the case. Beech Grove Police Chief Michael Maurice confirmed that the department is actively investigating and urges anyone with information to contact BGPD at (317) 782-4934 or via email at [email protected], as FOX59 detailed in their coverage.
In a further response to the incident, a SWAT unit was deployed to the 5400 block of Sagebrush Avenue during the investigation to ensure the absence of any hidden suspects in apartment complexes in the area, according to a statement obtained by FOX59.
Details of the investigation remain tightly held as law enforcement continues piecing together the narrative of that night. Community members with pertinent information are also advised to contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-TIPS (8477), as noted by WTHR.
