A police intervention escalated into gunfire on Indianapolis's north side earlier today when Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) officers were conducting a welfare check at an apartment complex. The incident resulted in a man being hospitalized with gunshot wounds following an encounter with IMPD officers. According to a report from FOX59, the events unfolded around 11:30 a.m. within the 7800 block of River Road. Officers arrived at the scene due to a reported disturbance involving a man and a woman.
During the altercation, details of which are still limited, at least one IMPD officer fired their weapon, hitting the man involved. As updated by the IMPD and reported by WTHR, the man was later listed in stable condition at a local hospital while no officers were harmed in the incident. A firearm was also reportedly retrieved at the scene, although specific circumstances surrounding the discharge of the officer's weapon are under investigation.
A statement acquired by WISH-TV from IMPD Public Information Officer Drew Brown at the scene confirmed that a disturbance inside the residence initially brought the officers to the apartment complex. Aftermath of the shooting saw the male subject wounded and a female detained by authorities. The area around River Road was shut down for investigation between North Keystone Avenue and East 79th Street with drivers being advised to seek alternate routes.
The September 11 incident was the eleventh officer-involved shooting of the year for IMPD, according to FOX59. This follows a recent shooting at a Lawrence motel related to the serving of a warrant. Investigators were on the scene throughout the afternoon, working to gather evidence and interview witnesses to determine the sequence of events leading to this latest shooting.
