In a development reflective of the changing retail landscape, Peach Fuzz, a children's store in Humboldt Park known for its inclusive approach, is shutting down after a six-year stint. The store's owner, Claire Tibbs, who also operates the vintage-modern shop Humboldt House, has cited a downturn in retail sales as the impetus for the closure, according to Block Club Chicago. Tibbs pointed out the business has not been financially sustainable recently, and with the additional personal responsibilities of two children, she has made the call to close the shop that has been operating since 2018 at 1005 N. California Ave.
Peach Fuzz has been a beacon for community engagement, organizing events such as drag queen story circles and protest-sign-making workshops for both children and adults, and while announcing the store's closure two weeks ago, Tibbs expressed her gratitude towards the support from her customer base over the years, the transition will see Peach Fuzz's most beloved items incorporated into the offerings of Humboldt House, and as for the closure, Tibbs has adopted an accepting stance, telling Block Club Chicago, "I'm trying to not take it personally and recognize and prioritize what lifestyle I want."
The ethos behind Peach Fuzz was to create an environment that felt welcoming, almost as if the space itself provided a hug to its visitors, embracing inclusivity and positive affirmation with its product selection and store design. Claire Tibbs, who opened the store, elaborated on this philosophy in her interview with the Chicago Reader, stating, "We all have [peach fuzz], no matter our age. It is tactile, textured, body positive, inclusive, and undeniably human."
Peach Fuzz distinguished itself not only through its events but also through a curated assortment ranging from gender-neutral clothing and LGBTQ+-themed children's books to artisan-made toys and international home goods, with Tibbs emphasizing the importance of showcasing various cultural perspectives in raising empathetic, well-rounded children, saying to the Chicago Reader, "There is something really beautiful about melding child raising from different cultures." The store is currently running a closing sale with significant discounts which will steepen in the final week of business, according to Block Club Chicago.
Despite its pending closure, the lasting impact of Peach Fuzz on the Humboldt Park community will not be easily forgotten, as its legacy of inclusivity and community engagement continues to resonate with those who walk through its colorful, welcoming doors.
