Motorists in New Orleans will need to adjust their travel plans as lane closures are set to impact Filmore Avenue this weekend. Residents should note that both lanes on Filmore Avenue between Arts Street and Venus Street will be shut down starting at 6 a.m. on Sept. 23, and the closure is expected to last until Sept. 24 at 5 p.m. According to the City of New Orleans, the closure is to facilitate utility and road work related to the Gentilly Terrace Group E project. Initially slotted for Sept. 20, the work has been pushed to this new window to accommodate the construction schedule.

Despite the closure, local traffic will not be left high and dry; accommodations have been made to ensure area residents can still enter and exit. Signage and traffic control measures like barrels and fencing will guide both drivers and pedestrians through the construction zone. The New Orleans Department for Public Works advises extra caution during this time as usual traffic patterns will be disrupted, as per the City of New Orleans.

The Gentilly Terrace Group E project, valued at $10.2 million and set to be complete by the summer of 2024, includes extensive work on sewage, water, and drainage lines, street rebuilding, and sidewalk and curb repairs. City officials shared that Barriere Construction Company, LLC, is conducting the work, with design by Integrated Logical Support, Inc. (ILSI). The contractors typically operate from 7 a.m. until sunset, Monday through Friday, confirmed by the City of New Orleans.

Since May 2018, 210 projects have been completed by the DPW, with the current value estimated at $1.047 million. With nearly $606 million worth of roadwork under construction, residents and businesses in the affected areas are being kept in the loop through neighborhood canvassing and the possibility of receiving updates directly via text message, asmentioned by the City of New Orleans. To get those updates, the public can text ROADWORK to 77295 or visit ready.nola.gov/alerts for more details.
