A 26-year-old Belle Rose man is behind bars on a first-degree murder charge after he brought an unresponsive 3-year-old girl to Assumption Community Hospital in Napoleonville, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Bernard Fleander Jr. was caring for the child and other children at the time, and Assumption Parish Sheriff Leland Falcon has said the girl was beaten to death during potty training at Fleander's residence in Belle Rose.
Deputies were dispatched to the hospital at roughly 3:20 a.m. Thursday, according to Tampa Free Press, after hospital staff initiated life-saving measures on the child. Detectives who responded reported seeing significant injuries across the girl's body, and they detained Fleander during the initial inquiry while interviewing witnesses who were inside the home when the incident occurred. By Thursday afternoon, detectives had obtained an arrest warrant, and Fleander was booked into the Assumption Parish Detention Center on the murder charge.
Sheriff Falcon's office, which operates its main headquarters at 112 Franklin Street in Napoleonville and a substation in Belle Rose, confirmed that the fatal beating is believed to have happened while Fleander was watching the child, according to local station WBRZ. Fleander is not the child's biological father. Investigators say an autopsy has since classified the girl's manner of death as a homicide, though the specific cause of death from that autopsy has not been made public.
Search Warrant Executed at Highway 308 Home
Fleander lives at 6751 Highway 308, a rural stretch of roadway that runs along the east bank of Bayou Lafourche through Belle Rose. Authorities executed a search warrant at that residence as part of the investigation. Highway 308 is an 82.5-mile two-lane corridor with minimal paved shoulders that serves as a primary traffic route parallel to LA 1 through this stretch of Assumption Parish, a rural community of roughly 1,400 to 1,700 residents.
Court records show this isn't Fleander's first brush with the law in the parish. Public detention records indicate he had a prior arrest booking in Assumption Parish on December 4, 2025, and he was separately charged with failure to appear in Assumption Parish for simple battery.
What Louisiana Law Says About the Charge
Fleander's first-degree murder charge stems from a specific provision of Louisiana law. Under La. R.S. 14:30(A)(5), a homicide is classified as first-degree murder when the offender acts with specific intent to kill or inflict great bodily harm upon a victim under twelve years of age, a statutory aggravating factor that applies directly to cases involving young children. A conviction on that charge carries a statutory penalty of either the death penalty or life imprisonment at hard labor without the benefit of parole, probation, or suspension of sentence.
The case adds to a grim statewide tally. Statewide child welfare data highlighted by Volunteers for Youth Justice indicated that 25 children in Louisiana died as a result of child abuse and neglect during 2025. Louisiana law under Article 610 of the Children's Code requires that suspected child abuse or neglect be reported immediately to the state Department of Children and Family Services through its 24-hour hotline or online portal.
Open Questions Remain in the Investigation
Assumption Community Hospital, the rural Critical Access Hospital in Napoleonville affiliated with Our Lady of the Lake Health where the girl was pronounced dead, serves as the primary emergency care facility for the surrounding rural communities. Investigators have not said whether additional charges or co-defendants could emerge involving the other children who were in the home, and the schedule for Fleander's bond hearing at the Assumption Parish Detention Center has not yet been announced.
This is not the first time the Assumption Parish Sheriff's Office has investigated allegations of child abuse in the parish.
