A fire that erupted at a substation in Davis County early Monday morning plunged over 8,000 Rocky Mountain Power customers into darkness, including residents of Centerville, West Bountiful, and Woods Cross. The blaze, which is still under investigation, has been linked to equipment malfunction according to a Rocky Mountain Power spokesperson. Jona Whitesides indicated that the utility is actively working to quickly and safely restore power, which is expected to be fully up by 11 a.m., as obtained by ABC4.
The fire not only affected residential areas but also caused operational disturbances to local businesses, including oil refineries in the vicinity. Amidst the restoration efforts, traffic has become a significant concern. Local police, responding to the widespread blackout, urged motorists to avoid nonessential travel. Power to traffic lights began to progressively return before 9 a.m., yet authorities advised drivers to treat all nonfunctional signals as four-way stops, especially being mindful of children en route to school, as detailed by KSL TV.
RMP's crews were dispatched to the affected substations near Legacy Parkway and Parrish Lane, as noted by a company representative. The utility provider has been transparent about the potential for further delays, even as they work against the clock to rectify the situation and stabilize the grid. "That's why you're seeing those two major outages," Whitesides said, as per KSL, highlighting the impact of the incident on multiple facilities.
In addition to household and street-level disruptions, the substation fire prompted refineries to activate emergency flare-off systems to combust excess gases, a measure safety protocols demand in such events. The flaring, visible from a distance, stands as a stark indicator of the ripple effects infrastructure failures can impose upon the environments they inhabit. Yet, as crews ardently work to bring back normalcy to the power grid, the community waits, hopeful for the promise of restoration to soon be fulfilled, as noted by RMP's estimated time of power being fully restored.
