The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is currently investigating a homicide that transpired inside the Indiana Convention Center Wednesday evening. According to FOX59, officers were alerted to a disturbance around 6:29 p.m. at the 100 block of S. Capitol Avenue. Before the officers arrived, bystanders near Illinois and South Street had already reported an adult male stabbing another adult male within the confines of the convention center.
Commander Scott Hessong of the IMPD confirmed that an off-duty officer who chanced to be in the vicinity responded swiftly to the dispatch call. The officer consequently found a male victim with injuries akin to trauma on the second floor hallway of the convention center. The victim was then transported to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his wounds. "Our hearts go out to the family of the victim involved tonight. We have another senseless homicide that didn’t need to occur," Hessong conveyed in a statement obtained by FOX59.
Detectives are diligently working alongside convention center employees, combing through video evidence and witness statements to unravel the sequence of events leading up to the homicide. While the connection between the victim and the assailant remains unclear, police have a 33-year-old suspect, named Brian Fulton, in custody. WRTV reported this arrest occurred on the night of the incident.
Hessong praised the community and staff at the convention center for their critical assistance, stating, "The employees and witnesses did exactly what we wanted them to do. They saw something and they said something." Despite the grim events, Hessong reassured the public that downtown Indianapolis is largely considered safe, attributing this to the city's substantial technological capabilities that often help to promptly solve crimes. "Downtown is safe. I argue that we have wonderful technology in the downtown area that helps us solve crimes when crimes do occur," Hessong told FOX59.
Details remain sparse as no events were reported to be occurring at the time of the stabbing, according to WTHR. This investigation is ongoing and Indianapolis authorities continue to seek out further evidence to ensure justice is served for the victim of this tragic occurrence. The IMPD is actively encouraging anyone with additional information on this case to step forward, offering contact through the IMPD Homicide Office or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana.
