Early last Saturday morning, local police encountered more than just a case of alleged impaired driving. According to a social media post from the Berkeley Police Department, officers were dispatched to the intersection of Fourth St. and Hearst Ave., where a driver appeared to be asleep at the wheel.

Upon their arrival, a 63-year-old Alameda man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. Police found him asleep in his vehicle with an open bottle of alcohol inside. After failing field sobriety tests, he was taken into custody.

During a search of the vehicle, officers also discovered a concealed handgun, adding a charge of carrying a concealed weapon to his case, according to the Berkeley Police Department. The man now faces multiple charges, including DUI and illegal weapon possession.
