Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam has officially launched the Mayor's Advisory Commission on Public Safety, as was announced in a recent statement. This new body aims to shape the future of the city's public safety by providing counsel on adapting services to meet the evolving needs of Carmel's citizens.
The commission, comprising public safety professionals and various stakeholders, is designed to fully explore and to effectively advise on safety concerns that are both current and emerging. One of its key mandates is enhancing community engagement, which in return, promotes stronger ties and trust between public safety officials and the residents they serve.
Mayor Finkam underscored the importance of safety in the city's quality of life, stating, "Our residents appreciate living in Carmel for many reasons and the safety of our community is chief among them." She continued, "Maintaining that community experience calls for the input of those who live and work in our city and our commission membership represents a broad mix of interests and expertise." These comments offer insight into the motivations behind establishing the commission, whose roles also include reviewing emergency response protocols and supporting crime prevention programs.
The commission is expected to also offer support for various programs aimed at preventing crime, such as neighborhood watch initiatives and youth mentorship. Moreover, it will seek to boost public awareness about safety practices and available resources.
