The Carmel Police Department is stepping into the future with its freshly introduced Drone First Responder (DFR) Program, according to a release from the department. This cutting-edge initiative aims to bolster the immediacy and efficiency of law enforcement responses by dispatching drones to scenes of distress ahead of patrol officers. The drones, which are part of the Carmel Police Air Support Unit, come equipped with the authorization of a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) waiver and are intended to assist officers by providing critical visuals and information before their arrival.
This new approach by CPD, reportedly the second of its kind in Indiana, aims to reduce response times while increasing safety for both the officers and the community. By having an eye in the sky, CPD officers can better assess situations and determine the appropriate level of force, and, sometimes, could clear the call before an officer arrives on the ground. In some instances, the quick drone deployment has the potential to defuse a situation or gather evidence without direct human involvement, a bonus for all parties concerned.
The DFR program in Carmel also features integration with a Real Time Information Center, setting a precedent for the use of technology in Indiana's law enforcement practices. With this technology, Carmel positions itself at the forefront of what's considered a growing trend among police departments nationwide. While DFR programs are not yet the norm, they reflect a significant shift in the use of unmanned aerial vehicles in public safety strategies, a shift that Carmel is proud to lead.
The City of Carmel's Police Department is embracing this new technology with a focus on advancing service quality for its residents. According to their statement obtained by the City of Carmel, "This translates to increased safety for both officers and citizens, decreased response times and more efficient responses to calls for service." The DFR program represents more than just an equipment upgrade — it underlines a shift towards progressive policing tools in an era where law enforcement agencies nationwide are exploring new methodologies to foster community safety.
