According to Fox 59, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department investigated the serious crash on the city's near northwest side, an area that links downtown Indianapolis with the 16 Tech district. As reported by WTHR, officers were dispatched to the reported crash at Indiana Avenue and Waterway Boulevard early Monday. No further details about the identities of those involved, the cause of the crash, or potential charges have been released.
A Corridor Built for Bikes, Still a Site of Danger
The stretch of Indiana Avenue where the crash occurred sits along a corridor that has seen substantial investment in bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure in recent years. The Indianapolis Cultural Trail underwent a major expansion that included a dedicated segment along Indiana Avenue from St. Clair Street to 10th Street, intended to improve non-motorized connectivity on the near northwest side, per the Indianapolis Business Journal. Citywide, the Indianapolis Department of Public Works reported constructing 8.5 miles of new bike lanes and 20.5 miles of new trails in 2023 alone under its updated Complete Streets policy.
