Carmel is set to celebrate its first Diwali Festival on upcoming Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Midtown Plaza. Organized by the City of Carmel and its new Diwali Committee, the event aims to honor the Festival of Lights, which symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and wisdom over ignorance for millions around the world.

According to the City of Carmel, the Diwali Festival is set to feature an array of musical and dance performances, along with an array of traditional food courtesy of local Indian vendors. Attendees can also expect to enjoy cold spark fireworks, and will even get to take home some festive giveaway ceramic tealights, known as diyas. "Diwali is a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together and celebrate the rich cultural diversity that makes Carmel so special," Carmel Mayor Sue Finkam said. 

The inaugural event takes shape following Carmel's announcement in September about the formation of the Diwali Committee. This group, chaired by Carmel City Councilor Dr. Anita Joshi, is a collective of various organizations representing the Indian community. Its formation marks a stride towards bringing different cultural narratives to the forefront of the city's social calendar.

Prices for this family-friendly event have not been announced, but it's expected to be affordable. More details on the schedule and activities will be shared as the date approaches.
