Law enforcement in El Paso County made a significant discovery this week during what began as a routine traffic stop for speeding and expired registration. The El Paso County Sheriff's Office reports that on the morning of October 14, Deputy Roberts, while working on a traffic grant near Constitution Avenue and Marksheffel Road, pulled over a vehicle driven by 44-year-old Osvaldo Luque-Camargo. Upon approaching the vehicle, the deputy found that Luque-Camargo was driving with a suspended license, without insurance, and had a firearm in the center console, sparking a deeper inquiry.
According to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Roberts obtained consent to search the vehicle and stumbled upon a hoard of illicit items, uncovering 380 grams of methamphetamine along with a firearm lacking a serial number, drug distribution paraphernalia, over a hundred gift cards, and multiple debit cards not in the driver's name, also he found ballistic body armor which added layers of complexity to the traffic stop that have since evolved into a full-blown investigation.
The discovery led to Luque-Camargo's arrest, and he now faces multiple charges, including Unlawful Possession for Distribution and Special Offender, both classified as DF1 felonies, and Unlawful Possession of Financial Devices, a class 5 felony, in addition to several traffic violations. Following the arrest, Luque-Camargo was booked into El Paso County Jail with his bond set at $50,000.
El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal highlighted the significance of the bust, as per El Paso County Sheriff's Office, stating, "Thanks to the vigilance and great cop work on behalf of Deputy Roberts, what started as a traffic stop led to the removal of dangerous drugs and an illegal firearm from our streets," he further mentioned the commitment deputies have to keep the county safe emphasizing that this incident is reflective of their utmost dedication, a sentiment likely to echo within the corridors of the sheriff's office as well as ripple through the community that rests under the umbrella of their protection.
