Tragedy struck Greenwood on Tuesday when a fire in the Cambridge Square Apartments claimed the life of one individual. Despite a swift response from the Greenwood Fire Department after the initial call at around 4:47 p.m., the fire, which eyewitnesses reported filled hallways with smoke, led to one casualty, the department confirmed. The firefighters, upon their arrival, encountered a smoke-veiled building from which some occupants had already escaped, according to FOX59.
The exact circumstances that led to the fatality remain under scrutiny. First responders, who found no immediate signs of fire upon reaching the scene, made entry to locate the victim who had been unable to make it to safety, in an engulfed apartment, as identified by the caller. The victim was promptly transported to Eskenazi Hospital but unfortunately was pronounced dead. The identity of the victim was not released, as reported by WTHR.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are now in progress, with the Greenwood Police Department and the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office. The cause of the fire and what happened during the deadly blaze are being carefully investigated to find answers and prevent future tragedies, as detailed by WRTV.
