Early yesterday morning, commuters on I-680 northbound were brought to a standstill as emergency services responded to a three-vehicle crash near Rudgear Road. According to a social media post from the Contra Costa CHP, the collision occurred just as dawn was breaking and left one person dead. The incident snarled traffic, prompting the closure of all lanes while authorities assessed and cleared the scene.
The CHP has diligently worked to piece together what transpired. As it stands, the cause of the crash remains unclear. Commuters found themselves diverted as crews worked to reopen the interstate, a process that took nearly four hours. The highway was finally declared clear, and traffic resumed its normal flow at around 9:49 a.m.
The identity of the victim has not been released, pending notification of next of kin. Meanwhile, the California Highway Patrol is reaching out to the public for assistance. "If anyone witnessed the incident, or the events leading up to it, please contact CHP Contra Costa in Martinez, (925) 646-4980 or email your contact information to [email protected] to be contacted by the investigating officer," stated the Contra Costa CHP in their announcement of the unfortunate event.
