The NWS alert suggests that the combination of dry surface vegetation and windy conditions create an ideal environment for fires to ignite and spread quickly. "A combination of drying surface vegetation, wind gusts in the 20 to 30 mph range, and relative humidity values below 30 percent will lead to an elevated risk of grass and brush fires this afternoon across much of central Indiana," the weather service explained. They advise against any open burning given these conditions and stress the importance of caution to prevent accidental fires, such as being mindful of equipment that may cause sparks and avoiding the operation of vehicles in dry vegetation areas.
Looking ahead, the weather outlook for the week projects continued sunny skies with no predicted hazardous weather following today’s alert.
