A tragic incident on Springfield Highway has led to charges against 59-year-old Charles H. Holt, who now faces vehicular homicide and reckless endangerment for his role in a fatal collision last year. Nashville authorities have disclosed that on December 9, 2023, Holt was behind the wheel of a Kia Sorento that strayed into oncoming traffic on the highway and collided head-on with a Volkswagen Beetle driven by 75-year-old Jurgis Juodenas, who died at the scene.
The crash investigation revealed that Holt had been traveling under the speed limit, between 50-45 mph, according to the Event Data Recorder (EDR) of his vehicle. Witnesses reported that Holt's car swerved dangerously, narrowly missing other vehicles before the fateful impact. Despite both men wearing their seatbelts, only Holt survived, escaping with minor injuries.
Digging further into the circumstances of the collision, Holt stated that he had started a new blood pressure medication and was short on sleep, having only gotten two hours before getting on the road. He suspects that he may have passed out at the time of the accident. The medication in question included warnings advising users to refrain from driving until they fully comprehended how it might affect them.
The charges filed against Holt hinge on these factors - the combination of inadequate sleep and the side effects of his new medication.
